Once upon a time there was a show on the network formerly known as ABC Family (Freeform) that had the best opening credits paired with the worst acting of ever. That show was Make It or Break It, the charming story of four adolescent gymnasts, Kaylie, Payson, Emily, and Lauren, and their quest for Olympic gold. And no, that’s not a typo. Payson is seriously one of their names.
Because we are in the midst of the Olympics and the gymnastics portion is sadly over, at our house, we’ve decided to supplement this loss with the re-watch of a classic. If you aren’t familiar with this gem of teenage angst and stale gym sweat, what are you waiting for? Stream it now on Hulu.
This show has it all you guys, I’m so serious. Minutes into the first episode, my sister and I started with the, “OH, remember, she’s going to…” and “Didn’t she sleep with…” We had a hearty list of 78 dramatic events going when I remembered this show only aired for THREE SEASONS. Teen soap operas are the best. I’m not going to tell you if someone comes back from the dead, but I’m not going to say it doesn’t happen.
Even though the girls were technically competing for a spot on the London 2012 Olympic team, watching the show now feels right in my heart. It is so unrealistic I can almost believe that Kaylie, Payson, Emily, and Lauren are the 2016 Olympic team in some other universe. Almost, because even in that alternate universe Simone is mopping up the gold medals.
But alas, Simone’s dominance is complete and there is no gymnastics left to watch. So what do I need to cope with that? I need four of the least realistic gymnasts of all time performing mediocre stunts while the audience watches only close-up shots of their legs moving and their toes pointing because THAT’S AS GOOD AS IT GETS IN GYMNASTICS*.
And the only thing worse than the “gymnastics” is Lauren’s personality. Don’t worry too much about Lauren, though. According to this “where are they now” article via MTV, she’s starred in all the Sharknado movies. Perfect 10, Lauren! Then again, maybe the worst part was Candace Cameron Bure coming in hot with the born again virginity and religious morality. Hooked yet?
I’m about halfway through the first season now. If anyone wants to watch/discuss, I’m always up for some Twitter chatting. And keep your eyes peeled for a follow-up post on my favorite Make It or Break It moments. But for those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of watching the show yet, I wanted to keep the surprise alive! Enjoy!
*According to the Make It or Break It wiki page, the stunts on the show were done by collegiate, elite, and Olympic gymnasts. Okay, maybe that’s true. But it certainly wasn’t true in the pilot.
